I just finished "Friday" and recommend it highly.  I was enthralled all the
way (unlike "Stranger in a Strange Land") but I suppose that was partly because
I fell in love with the heroine, Friday.  I found Heinlein to be both subtle
and clever, but not *too* subtle or clever.

No, it's not "lit'rature", but it's fun...
