Granted, most people probably respond better to a machine that is 'friendly'. This is because the machine is generating all of the social cues that we would expect from someone who is polite and helpful. You know, like Manners the Butler. Personally, I don't care how freindly the machine is. I get ticked off when the system tells me, "I can't let you do that Dave, because you're liable to hurt yourself." Gad...the last thing I need is some smart-ass systems programmer in the sub-basement telling me I have to kow-tow to the system! That's what bugs me about VMS.
