I was not going to enter this debate as I feel that it is the type of
"heated" debate that no one wins, or where no one listens to the other
side, but Laura, your last reply was to much.  Comparing a dislike of
Blacks, computers, et al, is NOT the same as a dislike of cigarette smoke.
When I am around a computer, I usually don't have to cough to clear my lungs.
I have yet to be around a person, white, black, or purple, that irritated
my eyes by their very presence, my ears YES, my eyes, no.  Now for the
important part, I DO OBJECT TO THINGS THAT CAUSE ME PHYSICAL DISCOMFORT.
If you want to smoke on the street, in YOUR car, in YOUR house, fine!  If
you want to smoke and make ME uncomfortable, possibly ruin a meal with your
smoke, possibly ruin my suit with your ashes (it DID happen to me), then I
do object.  After all, if you wait until you finish your meal (or whatever)
and THEN light up outside, you are only DELAYING the (I assume) gratification
that you get from smoking.  If you light up inside, you are causing me PHYSICAL
discomfort.  I do not propose to take away your right to smoke.  I do propose
that it is UNREASONABLE for you to have the "right" to cause me PHYSICAL dis-
comfort.  NOTICE I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT STUDIES OF PASSIVE SMOKE CAUSING CANCER
OR WHATEVER, I am talking about the annoyance of smoke itself.  Other social
norms that are bothersom or harmful to people are outlawed.  You cannot
exercise your right to hit me, without expecting to be arrested.  You cannot
walk your dog in NYC and have him evacuate in the street where I can walk in
it, without a fine, and I don't consider it to be unreasonable to ask you to
delay your smoking pleasure, so I can breath and see (two things I have gotten
used to over these many years).
