Don't lose them. We need more people with high ideals. BUT, temper them with reality. If everyone on both sides were as idealistic as yourself, we would be able to 'beat our swords into plowshares' (spelling ?). However, history should tell us that there will always be those that do NOT have the same ideals and beliefs as the rest of the populace. You can talk SANELY only to someone who is SANE. If someone were to beat on my girlfriend with a crowbar, I would not stand back and attempt to discuss the ramifications of his actions on society and how it would be in both our best interests for him to put down his weapon. Somehow I feel that the only argument he would understand would be a bigger crowbar. If I found myself being attacked by four bruisers in a dark ally, it would be a little late for me to say..."Time out, I need to go and take a few boxing/judo/karate lessons. I'll be right back to take you suckers on as soon as I'm ready." The ideas here are that you need to be PREPARED for the worst, but wishing with all your might, and working toward that wish, that you will never have to use force or weapons on anyone, because it does go against your nature.
