The other day a COMPUTER phoned my house, did a preamble and started
asking questions: each of which was followed by a beep and some time
for me to give my answer.  I wasn't home.  My answering machine took
the call.  So their machine recorded my greeting, and that's it.  
Anyway, my answering machine can be set to answer after any number of
rings: I use three.  I can always sleep through 3 rings if I want to.
People who work nonconventional hours should consider investing in
such a device.
