I always leave the space blank on things like credit card applications, because you know the b*st*rds are using SS numbers as index numbers in credit files, but who else can I tell to f*** off if they ask me? The Phone Co? My bank? My employer? (I suspect the answer is that the Phone Co. doesn't have the right to know, but that the other two do, and possibly need to know for withholding or tax reporting purposes. How about companies in which I own stock that pays dividends? (net.legal fans, take note...)
