Supporting repressive governments in order to further the cause of
democracy is not only (a) an absurd contradiction, and (b) immoral,
it is also (c) INEFFECTIVE.

(Is this practical enough for you, jj?)

It's happened again and again.  We support a ruthless dictator.  The
people of his country learn to hate us.  (No, those Iranians weren't
out in the street shouting, "We love you, Uncle Sam!")  The dictator
falls.  The new government, surprisingly enough, becomes violently
anti-American.

Forget the ethical questions.  (Our government obviously already has.)
Is this serving our best interest?
