(Is this practical enough for you, jj?) It's happened again and again. We support a ruthless dictator. The people of his country learn to hate us. (No, those Iranians weren't out in the street shouting, "We love you, Uncle Sam!") The dictator falls. The new government, surprisingly enough, becomes violently anti-American.
