Re: the pronunciation of herb.

NO! NO! NO! My dictionary shows the H in parentheses, indicating that
"what is symbolized between is present in some utterances but not in
others..."  Hence, the sounding of the letter H is optional, and
equally "correct" to be left unsounded as sounded.  Thus while the word
"herd" (for example) MUST be pronounced Herd, the word "herb" can be
pronounced as either Herb or 'erb.  As a side effect of this, one
usually does not have "a Herb garden," but rather "an 'erb garden!"
