I guess this was before the "walk/don't walk" lights were prevalent. The crossing signal also had something to do with both the red and yellow lights being on at the same time. I've even seen this behavior in Worcester as recent as a few years ago. Being from Connecticut, I was initially very puzzled by the flashing green lights around Lincoln square.
