Well, the fact that most of us are gainfully employed suggests that there's a need for us. I would suggest that the large discrepancy between the number of lawyers between the U.S. and Japan is mostly due to the different attitudes and expectations of the *clients*. Many people's reaction to adversity (accident, medical problem, business difficulty) is "SUE!". Perhaps the Japanese have less adversarial ways of working out disputes. Our legal system is tremendously complicated, in part due to the vast number of interest groups which have lobbied for legislation and regulation in every facet of society. The result is a system which needs a lot of lawyers. Is this bad? Perhaps it's just one of the costs of democracy in a society which is anything but cohesive in viewpoint.
