They should be allowed to vote, but clearly shouldn't be allowed to make laws. Probably they shouldn't be allowed in the upper levels of the civil service, either. If an opinion is wanted on the legal clarity of a proposed law, suitable lawyers (or perhaps judges) could be contracted to comment. Anyway, I don't have much hope that the lawyers in Parliament will soon vote to declare their jobs to represent a conflict of interest, even though it is. Martin Taylor
