(Needless to say, I was not very interested in botany.) One day we had a test. One of the questions was What are two byproducts of photosynthesis? Well, I had never *heard* of the word photosynthesis before, so I wasn't quite sure what to say. But, I had some idea of what a byproduct was. So I put down my best guesses: "Iron filings and coal" When we got the test back, the teacher read my answer out to the whole class. Even today, I still run into old schoolmates occasionally who remember me only as "iron filings and coal". (I left that school after that one year.)
