KASSEL, West Germany - The sight of plastic garden gnomes baking in the
hot sun was too much for a West German housewife.
   The woman, identified only as Baerbel, teamed up with her boyfriend
and went on a gnome-snatching spree in the suburbs of Kassel, taking
more than 50 from front gardens before angry residents tipped off police,
the Bild newspaper said yesterday.
   Bild said police discovered dozens of stolen gnomes, some freshly
repainted green and yellow, littering the woman's home.
   In court, the woman told the judge: "I felt so sorry for them standing
there in the blazing sunshine as their colors were all faded.  I just
wanted to repaint them and put them back," Bild said.
   Bild said the judge suspended the hearing while the woman underwent a
psychiatric examination.
