I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that an alcohol wash is effective when
performed soon after contact.  You're allergic to the oil from the plant, and
maybe alcohol (unlike water) is a solvent for the oil.  No oil, no itch.

Perhaps the reaction is not allergic per se, but the irritation is rather like
an allergic reaction.  I'm sure glad I don't react to the stuff...
