This weeks issue of Electronics Magazine has an article about the new
CHEAP 1200 modems that are starting to come out.  They said that the only
things that are available are a $200 evaluation board from Cermatek and
a chip set from Exar that lets you put a modem together for under $100.
(The chips for the Exar modem cost $53 in quantitiy 10K.)

Everybody predicted that the prices will come down even further in the
near future.
