The explanation that I have heard all my life for the cookie system is
quite simple and VERY ancient:

Human beings are approximately 90% visual creatures (no funny jokes, I
mean that about 90% of the sensory input that they rely on in everyday
life is of a visual nature).  This means that night (i.e., black) was
not just unpleasant to early man -- it was downright dangerous!!
