Thanks to everyone who responded to the "long rod" query.  You
all basically echoed (in more precise terms than I was attempting
to use with my friend) the response I was giving him -- namely
that, "There ain't no rod like that!"  I thought I finally had him
convinced, but he called a few minutes ago saying, "C'mon, what *if*
there was a rod like that?"  I give up.  Thanks again, all.
