Ok, he did improve the country by implanting extensive land reform and other things (I'm not going to go into detail about them now), but had the US not intervened when they did, the commies would have walked right in. Remeber, Guatemala is RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP (for you nonadepts, it is next door to Mexico on Mexico's south border). Since then (late 50's, early 60's), the country has been plagued by several military dictatorships and political instability. However, we can say that they are "on our side".
