The 611 was built in Roanoke VA in May of 1950, billed as "the modern coal-burning steam locomotive" at the time. The 611 was far advanced in its use of roller bearings, high grade steels, and trivial maintenance procedures. The 611 also is of the 4-8-4 (Northern) wheel arrangement and weighs 329 tons (engine and loaded tender). Tractive effort is 71000 pounds and operating boiler pressure in 300 psi. 611 has a duplex HT stoker and carries 29 tons of coal as well as 24000 gallons of water in its tank. 611 is out west after its trip from Richmond VA at the end of July. I expect it will be in the area for a while before proceeding up to Detroit and other points along the Norfolk Southern system. Greg Richardson University of Virginia uvacs!gr
