Computer networks are probably the very most uninhibited of all forms of communication. I say things on these notesfiles that I'd NEVER bring up face-to-face or on the phone or even in a letter. One of my first contributions to this notesfile concerned the local RJEnet, an IBM-based network of campus remote printer/punch stations staffed by undergraduates. The RJEnet had an interactive message-sending capability, and conversations abounded. The things that were said in those conversations! Feelings hurt, romances made and destroyed, and gross misunderstandings were very commonplace. And I think it's because no one was afraid much of what they said. After all, you can't see the other person's face or even hear his voice, so why should you give a damn what you say to him? *sigh*. And to think I was once caught up in all that. I think the only reason that doesn't happen in here is because of the great time delay inherent in all USENET transactions. Charley Kline, U of I CSO. {pur-ee,ihnp4}!uiucdcs!uiucuxc!kline
