I've seen people use all of these:

"You rang? "

? "  (that's right, with line feed embedded)

Personally, I like a simple ": ", NON-exported so you get "$ " in a
subshell and can tell the difference.  It amazes me, the sort of goop
people will clutter up their CRT with!!
