This may be society's fault, again, but I am not sure that the educators are to blame. I spent my high school days winning local mathematics competitions, and even won a scholarship to the University of Waterloo (which I did not take for reasons that seem bad in hindsight). Of course, I was considered weird, but then I thought (and think) that mathematics is beautiful. When all the other girls were discovering the beauty of nail polish and high heels, I was discovering trancendental numbers and algebra. To this day I cannot find beauty in nail polish -- but a huge factoring problem which resolves to a simple solution -- THAT'S BEAUTIFUL! laura creighton utzoo!utcsstat!laura
