I'm sure many of the readers of this article are aware of the current video
market. It may be news to some of you, however, that a new format is emerging.

This format is '8mm' so called because of the reduced width in the tape to
approximately 8mm. This format will REVOLUTIONISE yet again portable video.

If you are not in a desparate hurry to buy a portable video recorder, then
it may be best to wait 18 months or so till these new format camera/recorders
appear on the market. There will be no need to cart around all that bulky
equipment - I can assure you the novelty will soon wear off, and the weight
and inconvenience of the equipment will cause to leave your equipment at
home.

The new equipment will consist of a camera with a recorder in it. The tape
will be about the size of an audio cassette tape. the total unit will be
about the size of the better cameras on the market today. the unit will
probably weigh about 4 -6 pounds.

Also several camcorders will be available by Christmas - these will be
cameras with standard Beta or VHS tapes in them these may be a good buy
for people who currently own home VCR's eg. ME.

If you are currently in the process of buying video equipment, there are
several magazines which offer reasonable advice - 'Video Review' and
alsop 'Video' being a couple that are generally available.
