Anyone who would leave it up is just plain lazy. It looks better down, it keeps the pets out, and it doesn't wake you up in the middle of the night, which is the only time the seat drops, of course. This has nothing to do with looking first. This way, everyone lifts something, so there are no surprises. (Try sitting down - and in - at three in the morning.) Believe me, it's not hard to remember. Now I do it automatically even in houses where it's not SOP. Not lowering all pieces is thoughtless. Refusing to is arrogant.
