Would you rather have the seat up or down? A person making a middle-of-the-night visit, for whatever purpose, doesn't need the sudden wakefulness that comes from bare flesh contacting cold porcelain and/or water. Another aspect to consider: Toddlers frequently find the toilet fascinating - occasionally with tragic results. Keeping the lid down is a prudent act when small children are around.
