They appear as a subcutaneous tear. During the later stages of pregnancy, most women's skin stretches beyond that point. After childbirth, the stretchmarks may be quite dark or nearly translucent. As time goes on, *most* women's stretchmarks fade, but they never go away. My experience is that, although the tummy may return to its original size, the skin is permanently stretched ...and the stretchmarks remain a happy reminder of the little one you've carried.
