I did not mean to suggest that the organizers of this particular conference are the targets of my criticism; indeed, I congratulate them for informing potential attendees of their obligations under the law. I sincerely apologize for not making this obvious in my original note. I also realize that most conferences will have to deal with this issue in the future, and meant my message not as a "call to action", but rather, as a "call to discussion" of the proper role of goverment in AI and science in general.
