I have personal proof. I rode my heavily-loaded touring bike through the busiest intersection in London (Hyde Park Corner) around 4 PM once. I was much less scared than I have been many times in the States, because British drivers are polite to bikes. (After all, it might be their Dad.) This is true even though they are hell-on-wheels to other cars. Even though you do everything right, you're in some danger on American streets. I've been run into by a car AFTER (I thought) I made eye contact with the driver. I've been brushed by teenage jerks who thought it was fun to play chicken with a defenseless cyclist. Sometimes I'm tempted to carry a shotgun. One thing big, heavy locks are good for is breaking windshields. I've never done this, but it's a jolly fantasy. The faster I ride, the less trouble I have with cars. I think they think I'm serious. Roger Hayes {lotsa places}!arizona!rogerh
