I understand that the "Orphaned Responses" messages is generated
by the "notesfile" program when the user responds to a message
about a topic for which the "root message" is not present on
the system.  

But that is not the point.  The subject   *is*  present, but
the author(s) of notesfile chose to ignore it and instead to
fill the "Subject:" line with garbage.
 
The notesfile may be a fine system, I do not know, I have not
used it.  In this case the author(s) have made a mistake,
and it should be corrected, if only to keep whatever reputation
they have.
