I think we need to address ourselves to the real issue here -- we
have a horrendous legal system that refuses to protect us from
violent criminals.  It isn't fair to place the blame on judges,
parole boards, etc., either.  We let violent criminals out of jail
because it's cheaper, because we'd rather have them on the street
than pay the cost of keeping them in jail.

We say, "Protect us, but don't send us the bill."  Then we wonder
why the legal system doesn't do a very good job of protecting us.
