You could send a photo in when you apply for the card, or as part of some confirmation process. A careful analysis of the costs would have to be made, but it might be cheaper than the loss due to stolen cards. Yes, its a hassle. Sending in a photo would be nicer than having the bank take yours, but both would be acceptable alternatives. Speaking of photos: recently our university started issuing photo id cards for the students. good idea, except ---- where are the other copies of the photos going? It certainly makes it easier for the police spys (you know, the ones with the Nikon & long lens, leisure suit, white socks, and flat feet). They're the ones taking pictures at the homecoming ralley to see who is smoking what and carrying what signs. (The sixties aren't dead, they're just living on in the minds of professional paranoids). Anyway, photos on credit cards (assuming merchants even looked! - how many check your signature?) might lessen the loss - perhaps its worth considering. P.S. - Temporary farewell to the net - the gods of policy here have decreed changes, and its bye-bye time until later. Sigh. -- Brian Kantor, UCSD. {philabs, ucbvax} !sdcsvax!brian sdcsvax!brian@nosc
