Suppose the attacker had *also* been armed with a handgun. Would you two have shot it out in the parking lot with your wives and children (and who knows who else) at risk? The thought frightens me as much as the original situation. No, there is no way to protect yourself from genuinely crazy people, but I'm not sure that a handgun is a panacea in this case.
