I and a number of other people have said "All Karl had to do was
call the police."  The response we get is:

	So, what does he do in the time between when he calls and the police
	arrive, when the creep busts in the door and kills all of them
	with his tire iron? <such a thing takes about 2.5 minutes,
	so it's entirely possible>  

The answer here is simple, Karl uses his rifle to shoot the
"creep."   My claim is that Karl by his own statements is a dam
fool.  Given that the situation warranted the use of a gun for
protection, then 

	a. given the opportunity he should have called the
police,

	b. he should have waited for them to arrive and,

	c. he should not be threatening people with an empty
weapon.

Based on his own stupidity Karl needlessly placed himself and
others in danger.  Giving Karl a hand gun only encourages such
behavior. 

Many hand gun owners consistently demonstrate such lack of
common sense which is why I am in favor of banning hand guns
except for combat troops.
