In my neighbor- hood, the cops would have been called by someone other than Karl who heard what was going on. I guess most people don't want to get involved (as the old saying goes). I agree that this whole situation does not constitute any reason to be suspect of Karl's ability to handle a gun or a stress- ful situation. I think that the laws on gun control in New York are there to protect permanent New York residents. Maybe there is another way to do this, but I haven't heard of a good suggestion from anyone on the net. I think any of the good solutions to the gun con- trol problem are too costly for the state to assume. If the state passed the cost onto the permit for guns there would just be more il- legal guns. The problem of gun control is twofold. The situation as it stands now is bad: too many people's lives are threatened out there. But the solution has to consider the following: protection of the innocent and discrimination towards the irresponsible (eg. crooks, psychological impaired,youth,....). To take away guns from the innocent, increases the danger (it's too late for that). To give out guns haphazardly, also increases the danger. Minimizing the risk involves costly measures such as mandatory courses in the use of a firearm (something like policemen's training, psychological and character investigations) Until somebody desides to take the resposibility for the costs of proper gun control, we'll just have to be a little more careful and insightful (ie. forsee sticky situations).
