The article begins with the cop-out "To the extent that...", but we are all pretty sure that the author considers the extent pretty broad. To really point out all the mental deficits exhibited in it would take too much energy, but let me respond instead to what I view as a moralistic stance taken by the author: 1. Drugs don't "make people degenerate". People can degenerate physically if they abuse drugs, food, cigars... 2. Once again, if people with problems overdo drugs, a humane attitude toward the problem would be to help them with their problems (drugs aren't their problem, drugs serve as an escape from their problems). NB. Is it not an appropriate comment on life in this uptight country of ours that so many people do drugs, even though they are of poor quality?? 3. I can't understand why drunks piss on themselves in alleys. I can barely understand why junkies forego life's other pleasures. But I really CAN'T understand at all why some people get so morally indignant about the whole thing! Where is the love? Doesn't anyone regret their loss of mental and physical freedoms? Wouldn't it be nice if we could go to "drug night clubs", where trained assistants would help you enjoy mescaline fantasies, or erotic mushroom adventures? (oh, I forgot, sex is bad, too...) I can't wait until all the pleasure-haters in this country dry up and go away! Isn't it true that many cultures considered drug-related rituals an important religious experience, before the Christians came and spoiled all their fun? Seems like sour grapes, doesn't it! ("My god doesn't do drugs, so you can't either!") There doesn't even seem to be much biblical justification for this narrow-minded attitude. By the way, I should mention that my seemingly strong feelings on this subject stem mostly from fond remembrance of college times. Good grief, I hardly get high 10 times a year. I am a lot more "addicted" to computers, netnews, and UNIX than I ever was to any drugs. Charles Perkins Logic Design Systems
