A few years back, when I was unemployed, a couple of friends of mine offered to let me live with them on Long Island while I was looking for a job. When I went to the State Employment Office and told the man at the counter I was interested in moving to Long Island (and wanted to know about job opportu- nities), he looked at me real strange and said that anyone who wanted to move to Long Island must be crazy. Personally, I found Long Island to be nothing more than one big garbage dump. No one there takes any pride in their area, and there was trash strewn on every highway. It is no wonder that westerners despise the east, when the easterners do too. I agree that some stereotypes that certain areas of the country have about other areas of the country are wrong. Before I moved to North Carolina, for instance, I thought it was just like the Andy Griffith Show, but I found that for the most part it is a heck of a lot different. I enjoyed my stay in Raleigh a whole lot more than in New York, and I urge all westerners to change your beliefs about the south. (Your beliefs about the east are correct, but your beliefs about the south are wrong). Larry J. West
