It seems to be part of the local mentality. The only explanation I can think of for it is that Florida advertises heavily on our TV sets all winter. I had never seen a Florida commercial until I moved to Ohio. I have still never seen a California commercial anywhere. But in February, I'd rather be in San Diego than in Miami any year. (No, I've never been to Miami, so this probably isn't a fair judgement. But I do know I like San Diego.)
