Bikes have a completely different set of acceleration/braking capabilities. Its very easy for a bicyclist to check the oncoming traffic on a cross street by slowing up, and proceed if nothing is coming even if there is a red light. Since there aren't enough bicyclists (or they don't have a comparable financial force like the auto industry looking out for them/us) to warrant building a separate system, cars and pedestrians have no choice but to live with the chaos another set of moving contraptions creates. I as a bicyclist will continue to ride by bike type rules and I as a driver will continue to try and be cautious around anything smaller than me.
