when I was a grad student at columbia in nyc, i had a phone installed
in my apartment.  this was back in 1980-81, when they would actually
carry the phone out to the customer.  anyway, i got to talking with
the installer about phones and stuff. he left me a few gifts, like
some extra 4-wire cord and a long wall cord, and most important
of all

HERE COMES THE INTERESTING PART

a number (3-digits) that you could call (at least in NYC) to get
a synthesized announcement of your phone number.
unfortunately, i forgot the number ( i think it started with 9 ).
If anyone has the number, or any information about it (why is it
there, etc.) or about other cute idiosyncracies of the phone
network, such as rigbacks, etc, I'm very interested.
