Believe it or not, DEC actually sells an upgrade board for a LA34.
There are two versions ; the LAX34-XL with a 1K buffer, and the
LAX34-XM with a 2K buffer. They will allow baud rates up to 9600,
actually increase the print speed to 45 cps, have a non-volatile
set-up memory (like the VT100, so you don't have to do a set-up
after each power-up), and even prints an APL character set. 

I personally do not own one of these boards, but I have heard good
things from people who do have them. The info above is from a DEC 
manual on the LA34 series. In the current DEC accessories catalog,
they are asking $250 and $300, respectively, for the board.
