The film you describe as "The Crater Lake monster" is commonly shown with
the title "The Creeping Flesh".  The sneakers you see under the monster are
those of the college students the director hired to "operate" the monster.
If you look carefully, in several places you see a smiling face pop out from
under the carpet (that's what the monster is made from).  Apparently the
college students wanted to get their faces on the big screen.
