 Does anyone know the origin of American accents?
I appreciate that there are many variations (why that, too? I would not
have expected that segregation of immigrant ethnic groups to have such a 
marked effect) but a visitor from the USA is usually rcognisable by accent.
US-speak does not seem much like any English (in Britain) accent.
