If you want to find good shorter science fiction (well... lets say better than the average) look at: 1) The Hugo Winners - Issac Asimov has published 3 volumes, from the beginning of the award to about 1976(??). 2) The Nebula Winners - Each year's non-novel winners are published in a single volume by various editors. 3) The Science Fiction Hall of Fame - This (I think) bears some relationship to the Nebula winners - maybe SFWA's picks of good stories from before when Nebulas were given.
