Looks like another case of regional teams breaking traditional conference ties in an attempt to cut travel costs while still maintaining a high level of competition. Same thing happened a few years back in the WCHA. The Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana teams dropped out to form the CCHA, as road trips to Colorado and North Dakota were sapping their already meager budgets.
