There is some dispute over this. around here they have "readiness" programs for schoolage children deemed not ready to enter school (). Unfortunately the public schools *still* appear to have everything backwards. Readiness to enter school isn't defined as willingness or ability to learn; it's defined in terms of coordination and social ability. Of course, this shouldn't be surprising; this is the same public school system where money goes toward facilities (rugs in the halls and fancy gym equipment) and not in paying teachers anywhere near reasonable salaries.
