Persistent problems in checking out the new pack on drive A.  For
a guess, it's the drive and not the pack, but it's a bit hard to
be sure of this.  Timeouts on reads.  No SELECT LOCK (although I
had to switch lights around on the front panels to find a working
bulb to check this!) at any time.  Problems consistently in a few
places, all on even heads although not all on the same head.

Also, as a minor side effect of all this, the big fan on the front
of the Star Ring rack is dead.  It started squealing loudly, refused
to stop, and I ended up unplugging it.  Cross your fingers that
things still have adequate cooling, at least until Wern can get the
thing fixed.
