Volvo comments included: ancient body style, expensive to fix fuel injection/fuel filters, expensive to fix period, high safety standards, good resale, engines last forever, excellent room inside. Other cars that were recommended include: Saab, Peugot, Maxima, Camry, Citation, Thunderbird, Bronco II, new small Blazer. The result of all my searching was the purchase of a 1984 Volvo DL w/options. Reasons: Most head room/shoulder room (no sunroof), safety, resale, rep. of engine, first yr. with mettallic paint for DLs, good handling ability, sturdy ride (no big car ride, which usually feels like a boat, not a car anyway), hardly any bells, whistles, annoying voices, flashing lights etc. like on Datson/Toyota models, that's about it. If your looking, good luck, it really pays to check all the options and get only what you want.
