Anyone interested in cryptography and network security should take a
look at the June 1983 issue of Computing Surveys.  There's an article
entitled "Security Mechanisms in High-Level Network Protocols", by
V. Voydock and S. Kent.  If nothing else, the bibliography is worth reading.
