(east vs. west, continued) Message-ID: <929@rocksvax.UUCP> Date: Tue, 11-Oct-83 08:49:26 EDT Article-I.D.: rocksvax.929 Posted: Tue Oct 11 08:49:26 1983 Date-Received: Thu, 13-Oct-83 22:23:43 EDT References: <649@ritcv.UUCP> Organization: Xerox, Rochester, N.Y. Lines: 74 Oh, c'mon Jim Carbin--say you really like Rochester, N.Y..... It's probably not wise of me to let the cat out of the bag, but the absolute affection of Rochesterians for their town can best be seen in the conscious, institutionalized way they have of publicly demeaning, slamming, and otherwise running the place down!! They doth "protest too much...", and are really in love with the area. It was easy to see in Tim Smith's former message that he had acquired this affection for the town, and in what may have appeared to an outsider as a slur, was in reality a heartfelt expression of his homesickness. (It's alright, Tim, some of us understood your message). ------------------------------------ To cite a few examples: * A city so small that if you drive a half hour in any direction (except north) you're lost in the boondocks. * If you attempt to drive north you run into Lake Ontario, so lots of people are forced to keep boats to enable travel in that direction. * The plague of insufficient summer heat; so little, that most people don't even have air conditioners in their homes or autos, and have never experienced the joy of curling up at home with a good book on a 105 degree summer day. Instead, they are forced to spend much of the summer outdoors. * Roads so lightly travelled that most Rochesterians have never experienced the sweaty palms and adrenalin rush of major urban area streets and expressways. Some say that this laid-back commuter environment is what causes them to be so infuriatingly pleasant. * So much winter snow that, in desperation, much of the populace takes up skiing and other winter sports; resulting in unnatural good spirits (and health) for much of the winter. * Housing prices so reasonable that many never know the joy of saving for years to acquire a modest home and a character-building six figure mortgage. As a result, many are forced to squander their excess money on recreational pursuits, or fritter it away on investments. This results in an infuriating number of affluent retired people in the area. * A job market so good that many just stay with one company for their working careers; probably to retire with large pensions and add to the burdensome number of well-off retired glutting the many parks, museums, restaurants, etc. ------------------------------------ Enough said, I wouldn't want to make anyone ill. Besides, I,ve got to get back to my disgustingly interesting, well paid job. And tonight I,ve got to make that boring fourtyfive minute drive home through farm country to my secluded 39 acre wooded home; after supper I'll have to make a ridiculously small mortgage payment on same. Oh nuts, then I,ll have to plan for laying up the sailboat for the winter, and maybe later take a look at the downhill skis. And this Thursday the Philharmonic Orchestra concert series starts, so we'll be faced with a decision on which restaurant to eat at before, and......................... Gee, this is all starting to sound good, and I wouldn't want to mislead anybody on Rochester. sam houston (xerox)
