This 35 mile segment in Palm Beach and Martin counties is one of the few places where I-95 is unfinished. The route was debated for many years and one was actually chosen only to be re-evaluated 2 years later, with a route parallel to and about 50 feet away from the turnpike finally chosen. Florida did consider widening the turnpike but Federal funds were available for building a new road while no such funds were available for an upgrade. Thus it was cheaper for Florida to construct a new Interstate than to improve their turnpike. Contrary to an article by another Californian, there are many bridges, in California, especially in the San Francisco bay area, which charge tolls. -- Phil Ngai (408) 988-7777 {ucbvax|decwrl|ihnp4|allegra}!amd70!phil
